Conjure is on view at Arusha Gallery, The Old Silk Barn, Somerset

May 20 – June 19, 2022

Exhibition co-curated with Chantal Powell

Arusha Gallery is delighted to announce Conjure, a group show co-curated with Chantal Powel featuring hand built ceramics that speak to the artist’s hand and realm of the unseen. Artists, Chantal Powell, Bella Hunt & Ddc, Anousha Payne, Anna Hughes, Bea Bonafini, Rosie McLachlan, Rafaela de Ascanio, Hannah Rowan, Jame St Findlay, Carl Anderson, Ashleigh Fisk, Mel Arsenault, Katia Kesic and Shinichi Sawada present works in response to the idea of clay as the prima materia that is shaped and given life breath as the artist draws forth symbolic forms from their inner world.

“The dough evolves and changes and – with the purification of the [firing] flame- rebirthed into a new form, sometimes unexpected in its metamorphosis, just as in living organisms. In times of Antiquity, artefacts were objects of exchange and of ering, to sustain, support and accompany man on his search for connection between life and death, between the singular and the universal. In these works, the yearning to embrace a non-linear but circular dimension of time is evident: there is no beginning and no end, but eternity in the transformation and interconnectedness of every living thing. Many archetypal forms of strong, symbolic value appear here, such as the beast, the fountain, the water, the vase, the spiral, the mask.” Marina Dacci, 2022

Arusha Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with its main premises in Edinburgh’s historic New Town. Opening in 2013, Arusha runs an annual programme of exhibitions, events and fairs, both nationally and internationally, with regular collaborations with guest artists, curators, festivals and institutions.
