Centre Céramique de Giroussens presents JARRES, an exhibition featuring the works of 9 artists

July 11 – October 4, 2020

What is a terracotta jar? For thousands of years, a tall, wide, functional object for the conservation of precious goods, water, oil, cereals or ashes of the dead. The jar represents a force, it contains, transports, transmits. But today? Why make jars? What do they symbolize now?

The curators of this exhibition, Sébastien De Groot and Sylviane Perret wondered about this object as emblematic as the bowl, but whose form, function and utilitarian status have evolved over the centuries into a contemporary sculpture.

At the origin of this trip, a Roman jar over 2000 years old, found and loaned by the Archéosite de Montans. It rests, appealing, on a bed of sand. This invisible thread which connects the archaeological object to the contemporary object is materialized by an oblique line composed of large metal sheets which crosses the room, and on which are arranged the anagama firing jars by Sébastien De Groot, Eric Astoul, and Raphaël Meyer.

At the end of this line, Sylvie Enjalbert’s jars against a backdrop of other metal plaques on the wall. On both sides of this line, other shapes and interpretations of the jar, those of Gwénola Boullier, Lisa Hammond, Marie Delafosse, Janet Stedman to whom the curators wanted to pay homage, and finally the monumental jars with graphic decoration by Jean-François Thiérion.
