Position Details: Ceramics – Part Time Lecturer

The Department of Art and Design at Indiana State University offers NASAD-accredited programs and seeks a part-time Ceramics Lecturer.

The Ceramics program is housed in the Art Annex and has more than 6,200 square feet of floor space. The studio has excellent facilities; indoor and outdoor kiln areas containing 15 kilns, 16 wheels, independent clay and glaze mixing rooms, and a fully-stocked, raw-materials-storage room.

The primary responsibility includes teaching 1 introduction to ceramic course each Fall and Spring terms. The emphasis of each course will be on the potter’s wheel. Off-the wheel methods such as slab building may be included as long as the emphasis is on wheel thrown forms. Engage in student assessment as per department standards. The ceramic studio counts with student assistants; candidates may coordinate with assistants to perform some of their duties.

Responsibilities include teaching wheel throwing methods – Introduction theory and practice of clay body formulation, application of slips and glazes – Mix clay and/or teach clay mixing to intro class – Restock glazes used in class – Load/unload and Fire Student work – Contribute to studio safety and clean up – Collaborate with ceramic student exhibition when applicable along with senior faculty. – Contribute with student assistants’ supervision.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the professionalism of a ceramic artist, including emphasizing due dates and attention to detail, in both their own work and that of students. A commitment to teaching undergraduates and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential. Work collaboratively with senior Faculty and Department Chair. Salary is competitive.

An MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree in Ceramics is required. Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years teaching ceramics at the college or university level. Graduate school teaching appointment or Teaching Assistantship will be considered.
