The University of Wyoming Art and Art History Program welcomes applications for a full-time benefited Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Ceramics position. Qualified candidates will have the ability to teach the full range and variety of ceramic techniques including hand building, wheel throwing, mold making, and slip casting. They will also be familiar with various firing processes including reduction, oxidation, salt/soda, wood and raku firings. The successful candidate will manage a large and comprehensive ceramics studio. Their experience should include knowledge of kiln care and operation, shelf and furniture care, and maintenance of other machinery (clay mixer, pug mill, spray booth, mold drying box and 15 Brent wheels). Desired skills include kiln construction and repair. An understanding of mineral and chemical stocking/supply and inventory is crucial, as well as a knowledge of glaze chemistry and development and clay body formulation. Desired qualifications also include ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities. The successful candidate will incorporate equitable classroom policies such as encouraging inclusion and representation of diverse viewpoints and utilizing multiple methods of content delivery.
The ceramics area stresses both the technical and aesthetic aspects of the medium. The conceptual and expressive growth of each student is central. Students have the opportunity to study and develop both traditional and experimental forms and to apply a wide range of three-dimensional decorative and conceptual approaches. Through studio practice and research, students acquire a thorough knowledge of ceramics and establish a firm technical base in various processes and materials pertaining to the ceramics field. Students learn to create persuasive, original work in clay and develop a personal voice through the medium. Historical and contemporary ceramics are introduced to create a context for study.
The Visual Arts Building, a state-of-the-art LEED Certified construction, was completed in 2012 and provides individual office and faculty studio space adjacent to the primary studio area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach a 2/3 course load for the academic year including all levels of ceramics 2410, 2420, 3410, 3420, 4410, 4420, and ART 1120 (Foundation: 3-Dimensional Design). Note: advanced ceramics courses are normally stacked.
• Maintain ceramics studio area including wheels, all kilns, clay mixer, pug mill. Manage the inventory and purchase of materials/minerals, class glazes, and other necessary tools.
• Serve on department, college, and university committees
• Maintain strong creative research at regional and national levels
Work closely with work-study students whose assistance with technical tasks is crucial.
• Provide mentorship and serve as facilitator for the Ceramics Art Guild, including two fund-raising activities for travel to NCECA Conference.
• Serve as advisor to 18+ major and minor students in the department
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics
• 2 years teaching experience (primarily ceramics)
• Demonstrate an active professional practice and proficiency in a range of ceramic techniques
• Ability to manage an equipment/material heavy area
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• A demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere
• Demonstrated dedication to, appreciation for, and understanding of • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the classroom and curriculum
• Valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated 2 years teaching experience post-graduation is preferred
Ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities
