Hasan Şahbaz: Allegorical Figures, 2017-2020

Every positive or negative situation witnessed, every experience, every information acquired is both a possible subject and a source of inspiration for artists. Hasan Şahbaz’s efforts to evolve his works over time until they become pregnant with a new process are important in terms of establishing a connection between the series that follow one another and experiencing a consistent development. Şahbaz’s idea of transforming the Organic Objects series that has reached its saturation, as well as his desire to push the boundaries of the casting technique that he has made original, have enabled him to stand up the forms that remained dependent on the horizontal plane in the Organic Objects series and make them more three-dimensional. This transformation has given birth to the Allegorical Figures series, which extends from form to figure.

In the sculptures in this series, Şahbaz reveals sometimes clear, sometimes vague clues that allow the possible associations of any object, animal or human body to be read, and invites the viewer to catch these clues. The viewer is confronted with the allegorical presentation of intertwined representations in the sculptures, which are limited by plaster moulds combined with experimental and intuitive fictions, and in which the time-space dimension becomes ambiguous. In these allegorical sculptures, which are the projections of the images in Şahbaz’s mind, the viewer witnesses both the transformation of the massive body into a silhouette and the different reflections of the same form at every different angle.
