Kristy Moreno: Selected works, 2023-2025

My work focuses on the imagined personas of radicalized future ancestors. The hand crafted ceramics are fictional characters often resembling feminine personalities paused in space and time. I examine the essence of these future communities through the use of body language and attitudes to further explore themes of rage, empathy, and curiosity.

Individualizing these characters grants me the freedom to be curious about the influences they might have inherited from past societies, and I try to observe how the past often shapes future worlds. I’d like to imagine that these ancestors survived by refusing to participate in the patriarchal systems that came before them. They are no longer conditioned to believe that they have to live in someone else’s reality.

The work that I started making at Greenwich House Pottery is influenced by my time spent living and working in Mexico for most of 2024. I started off in Guadalajara in February for a residency with Cerámica Suro. Then, my time traveling was spent visiting museums, archeological sites, and sketching my personal experience along the way. I traveled to Mexico City for a month where I met ceramic duo ELES CERAMICA. These artists quickly became good friends through shared interests in ceramics, graffiti, and tattoos. In true ceramic community fashion, they welcomed me to make work out of their home studio where they primarily fire figurative sculpture in their homemade raku kiln. They are fairly new to ceramics but have developed their own refreshing personal style through tattooing and painting. The time spent with them reenergized my own practice and granted me a sort of permission to take more risks in a way that feels true to the themes in my work. By the end of my travels, I had met sculptors, printmakers, graffiti writers, tattoo artists, and muralists. Returning to the states and starting my residency at Greenwich House Pottery, I felt a boost in confidence to move forward with my own studio practice.
