Elena Gileva: The Chalices, 2019 – ongoing

The Father, The Son and The Holy spirit. Ritual vessels extracted from Russian iconography – so large a human can only use them as a garden pot; so abstract and non functional – a human can only consider them sculpture ; so empty- they can only hold ambrosia.

This ongoing series of large scale hand built chalices examines the antagonistic issues of legacy, echoes of orthodox culture and personal narratives. The oversized and sculptural shapes that evoke but are void of function speak of a male dominated world in feminine terms.
