Firebirds is on view at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre of Giroussens, Giroussens

October 8 – December 31, 2022

From October 8th to December 31st, the Contemporary Ceramics Centre of Giroussens is pleased to present to the public its exhibition “FireBirds”, the result of a collaboration with the Centre and the National Collective of Ceramists (CNC).

Following a call to ceramists who are members of the CNC, many artists expressed their wish to participate in this exhibition. In the end, no less than 80 artists present an original piece of their own personal vision of the theme. Ceramics is thus expressed in all its forms, expressiveness and materials. Stoneware, porcelain, earthenware, and high or low-temperature firing appeal to our senses, and touch us with a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.

“Firebirds”
In the history of ceramics in France and elsewhere, it is frequent to find decorations of birds on popular pottery and earthenware. The bird represents the friendly and free-flying companion, who inspires us in our daily life, our walks, in the countryside and the cities, and our relationship with nature.

Here, the choice of this theme was made in connection with the territory of the exhibition site; as the bird is recurrent in the decorations of Giroussens earthenware produced until the 18th century. This theme has also been taken up stylistically for the creation of the Ceramic Center’s logo.

The National Collective of Ceramists (CNC)
CNC projects are diverse. In addition to defending the social and economic interests of ceramists working in small workshops, the Collective is also an essential interlocutor with institutions. The CNC has a firm ambition to forge links with other associations, and public or private establishments, creating a useful network for the development of ceramic creation in France. Entirely voluntary, the CNC team operates in a resolutely collective mode. The CNC structures and federates at the national level 15 regional associations bringing together professionals in the sector, and more than 700 workshops.

Contemporary Ceramics Centre of Giroussens
For more than 20 years, the Ceramic Centre of Giroussens has presented to the public hundreds of exhibitions about Modern Ceramics. With local, national, and international artists, the Centre has shown itself as an important place in the field of art and ceramics. Open all the year, the team brings up to 8 temporary exhibitions per year.
