Katarzyna Miściur: Body and Light is on view at Taoxichuan Art Center, Jingdezhen

August 27 – September 27, 2024

When I first arrived in Jingdezhen, China – a city of porcelain, I planned to create work about architecture and people. This was driven by the belief that people—artists, craftsmen, and everyone contributing to the efficient operation of this vibrant community—are the creators of it all. However, I knew that along the way, I would be inspired and that something would change—whether it be the final shape, decoration, or color.

After spending two months in China and observing my surroundings, I began to notice the light. It was usually the evening or early morning light that caught my attention, whether I was walking around the city or taking short trips to the Jingdezhen countryside. I was inspired by all the colors created by the sun and rain: the mist covering the mountains, the pink and purple sky at dusk, the yellow and orange light of early morning. And all the people affected by this light.

As a result, my work features silhouettes of people—either figurative elements, like hands or heads, or entire figures (as in “Clay Man”)—built from “urban structures” that I developed. These structures represent a fusion of two worlds: the world of people and the city they built. Each figurative piece is covered with colors that tell the story of light.

Moreover, the colors of the piece called “Clay Man” were influenced by a beautiful dance performance called “Only This Green,” which I had the chance to see at Jingdezhen Theatre.

The work shown in the exhibition was created within the “Migratory Birds Project – Artist In Residence Program” at Jingdezhen International Studio.

Katarzyna Miściur is a visual artist from Poland specializing in ceramic art and drawing. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Poland. She holds an MFA in Ceramic Art, 2012. And MFA in Restoration of Ceramics and Glass, 2016. In 2010, she studied at the University of Porto, Portugal.

She participated in numerous Residencies and Symposiums, among others: Driving Creek Pottery, New Zealand (Artist in Residence Program 2024); Auckland Studio Potters, New Zealand (Artist In Residence Program 2024); XIII Kohila Symposium, Estonia (2023); Institute of Design in Kielce, Poland (Artist in Residence Program 2023); Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center, Denmark (Young Artist In Residence 2018, Project Network 2019); IX Ceramic Symposium LAB-ORO 2017, Poland (Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko); 48th International Ceramic and Sculpture Symposium, Bolesławiec, Poland (2012); Ceramic Symposium „Nebocadske Keramicke Leto”, Czech Republic 2009; as well as international biennale and exhibitions (chosen): 5th Siegburg Ceramics Award, Germany (2024); The 3rd Blanc De Chine International Ceramic Art Award, Hangzhou, China (2023); International Competition ‘Ceramics In Love’, City of Castellamonte, Italy (2023); XXX Concorso Ceramica Contemporanea ‘Mediterraneo’, Italy (2023); XII Biennal Internacional De Ceramica Del Vendrell, Spain (2022).
