Sacral Landscapes: an Online Exhibition of Intimate Earth at Cavin-Morris Gallery

August 7 – September 19, 2020

The magic that is ceramic results from a collusion of human and elemental Nature, a surrender and manipulation of fire, water, air, and earth. The variable is the intentionality of the ceramist who shifts the balance and dances with the interplay of the materials themselves. This is why the variations are endless in this most ancient form of art-making; seemingly basic clay enfolding endless secrets and revelations.

Sacral Landscapes examines the tangible and intangible presence the artists bring to the medium. They are translators, versed in the languages of materials of course, but some also bringing another power to it, born of subtle and not so subtle spiritual or animistic connections to landscape and Place. The work can be purely sculptural or it can be utilitarian. For example a chawan or tea bowl can be a sculpted space or it can be an amuletic object symbolizing a meditative universe, pulling us into its basic essentialism. A sculpture has no limits in its reference and poetic intimations. Sculpture can be an intimate song or story told.

This online exhibition brings together a group of artists whose efforts we have loved and admired over time and who we feel project that elusive, not totally definable connection with Nature in their works. The exhibition is by no means intended to be in any way encyclopedic, but rather an observation of the paths fulfilled by so many of the dedicated artists we work with.

Included are Rebecca Buck, Melanie Ferguson, Meg Chernack Beaudoin, Ashwini Bhat, Auguste Elder, Peggy Germain, Sandy Lockwood, Monique Rutherford, Tim Rowan, Osamu Inayoshi, Mike Weber, Mitch Iburg, Freeda Miranda, Jeff Shapiro, Chris Rond, Jane Wheeler, Sarah Purvey, Youngbin Lim, Akihiro Nikaido, Yukiya Izumita, and David Louveau.

The exhibition is accessible via Cavin-Moriss Gallery’s website. For additional information please contact info@cavinmorris.com or call 212-226-3768.
