Stephanie Marie Roos: SEE . ME . NOW at Städtische Galerie Neunkirchen, Neunkirchen

March 15 – June 9, 2024

Stephanie Marie Roos tells stories – of people as cultural, social beings who define themselves through clothing, accessories, gestures and facial expressions and present themselves to the world. She sees her ceramic images of people as a “kaleidoscope for observations and associations”. The themes, contemporary in the best sense, are taken from world politics as well as from the everyday and pop culture. Above all, however, existential questions and emotions are always heard behind the external appearance.

Stephanie Marie Roos’ figures are ambivalent: they seem strong and fragile, self-determined and determined by others at the same time, often doubtful and searching for their own identity and their individual role in society. The ceramic artist underlines the impression of inner vulnerability not least through the processing of the material clay. She rarely uses glazes for the hollow and thin-walled figures; she applies colors in an accentuated way as an engobe in the unfired state. The traces of the work process, the visibility of material and texture are significant for Roos in terms of both design and content: beneath the rough surface they reveal the fragility of the figures, who thus seem to be strangely close to the other person, only to withdraw again at the same time. Stephanie Marie Roos creates a panopticon of human and social diversity. Combined with a clear message: SEE . ME . NOW!
