The week’s news in the ceramic art world – April 24, 2024

• Ceramic Art Andenne announces a call for applications for its 17th international contemporary ceramics competition, which will be held from May 17 to June 15, 2025, in Andenne and the surrounding area (Belgium). Artists are invited to submit works to two wonderful exhibitions: one themed “Talisman,” which invites artists to explore the enigmatic world of symbols, mysteries, and hidden powers through ceramics, and a second, free-themed exhibition where artists are encouraged to submit their finest work. Three prizes (€2,500, €1,000, and €500) will be awarded. The application deadline is October 13, 2024.

• NCECA invites artists to submit applications for the 2025 NCECA Annual Exhibition, True and Real, which will run concurrently with next year’s conference. Curated by Judith S. Schwartz, the exhibition will be brought to life through the work of five invited artists and additional works selected through the open call for submissions. The exhibition will take place at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art between March and May 2025.

• The 51st Congress and General Assembly of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) will be held on September 16-20, 2024, in the beautiful ceramic cities of Alcobaça and Caldas da Rainha in Portugal. Hosted by a country with a rich ceramics tradition, the central theme, “Ceramics in the Mediterranean World: From Antiquity to Contemporaneity,” will highlight the region’s history in ceramics and its continued relevance in today’s society. IAC members are invited to submit proposals for presentations during the 2024 IAC Congress.

• The Ceramics Program at the Office for the Arts at Harvard recently opened registration for their summer courses. Over twenty courses are scheduled for this summer, including Surface Exploration with Katie Bosley Sabin, Looking at Animals and Focus on the Figure with Mary Kenny, Expressive Sculpture with Deighton Abrams, Digital Clay with Audrey An, and many more.

• There are less than two weeks left to apply for the 31st Mediterraneo Contemporary Ceramics Competition, which will take place in the beautiful Italian city of Grottaglie (Puglia) between July 13 and October 6, 2024. The deadline for applications is May 5.

• CLAY LA 2024 will take place next weekend, May 4-5, in Los Angeles. CLAY LA is Craft Contemporary’s annual ceramic marketplace, bringing together dozens of emerging and established ceramic makers from the greater Los Angeles area. Join the celebration, meet, and shop from some of LA’s most dynamic and vibrant artists.

• The American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) recently announced their four artists in residence for 2024–2025: Mary Cale Wilson, Michelle Solorzano, Reniel Del Rosario, and Stephanie Kim. The Artist in Residence program at the AMOCA Ceramics Studio provides time, space, and support for emerging, mid-career, and established artists to continue and expand their creative work. Congratulations!

• Applications are open until June 2 for Révélations 2025, the International Biennial of Crafts and Creation organized by Ateliers d’Art de France at the Grand Palais in Paris. This exclusive event attracts over 35,000 visitors. Participants are usually galleries, art dealers, and organizations that can afford the hefty participation fee (at least $3000 for a shared stand).

• The twentieth edition of the renowned Intonation International Clay Symposium is currently taking place in Deidesheim, Germany. Invited artists: Torbjørn Kvasbø, Johannes Nagel, Heidi Henze-Bach, Hanna Miadzvedzeva, Juan Orti, Svein Narum, and Friederike Zeit Narum (who is also the organizer).
