The XV International Biennial of Ceramics, Manises, 2022

June 10 – September 10, 2022

The inauguration of the XV Ceramic Biennial organized by the Manises Town Hall was held in June, after it was postponed last year due to the pandemic. This year, the prestigious national and international competition projects the name of Manises and its recent designation as a UNESCO Creative City throughout the world.

In this fifteenth edition, 325 artists of 47 different nationalities have participated, presenting a total of 597 works with ceramics as the common thread.
The Manises Town Hall Councillor for Culture, Xavier Morant, stated that “these figures show the international scope of the contest and that ceramics, with its tradition of more than seven centuries, is enjoying an excellent moment and augurs a promising future”.

“This year’s edition is very special for two reasons: because it had to be postponed in 2021 due to the pandemic and because we celebrate the Biennial as a UNESCO Creative City”, added the councillor.

The awards of this edition are, in the category of Artistic Ceramics, the President de la Generalitat Valenciana Award, endowed with 5,000 euros; the Diputación de València Award, endowed with 3,000 euros; the Ciudad de Vénissieux Award for artists under 35 years of age, endowed with 1,800 euros; and the Fondazione Museo Montelupo Award, endowed with an artistic residency in Montelupo, town twinned with Manises. The category of ceramic product design delivers the Ciudad de Manises Award endowed with 3,000 euros.

The inauguration and awards ceremony took place on June 10 and throughout the celebration of this biennial, which will close on September 9, various events will take place, such as two exhibitions by the winning artists of the previous edition. Thus, the exhibition Donde Vamos, by Carie Oltmann, Ciudad de Manises Product Design Award 2019, is on view at the Ceramics Museum, where it will remain until September 10; and Casa 8, by Uxue López, President de la Generalitat Valenciana Award, is also on view at the museum.

There will also be several conferences, film screenings and all the finalist works of this edition will be exhibited to the public.

The work “Pesantezza”, by Fernanda Cortés (Mexico) has also been recognized with the Ciudad de Vénissieux Award for artists under 35, endowed with 1,800 euros; and “Globe”, by Eloisa Gobbo (Pàdova, Italy) was awarded the Fondazione Museo Montelupo Award, endowed with an artistic residence in this town twinned with Manises.

Likewise, the Ciudad de Manises Award in the ceramic product design category, endowed with 3,000 euros, went to the work “Fire Works”, by Ubaldo Cristóbal Serrano (Madrid), “for using the thermal possibilities of ceramics to incorporate fire and warmth to the interiors, in a design with a high technical and aesthetic level”.

These works, as well as the 56 finalists selected from among the 597 submitted, are part of an exhibition that will take place between June 10 and September 9 in the exhibition hall of Los Filtros, and appear in the catalogue that is published on the occasion of the Biennial.

During these three months there will also be different activities with ceramics as the common thread, such as conferences and film screenings, and the exhibition of the works of the previous edition winning artists. Thus, the exhibition Donde Vamos, by Carie Oltmann, Ciudad de Manises Product Design Award 2019, can be visited at the Ceramics Museum from June 6 to September 9; and Casa 8, by Uxue López, President de la Generalitat Valenciana Award 2019, from June 9 to September 9 at the Casa de Cultura, Vicent Ros exhibition room.
