Steen Ipsen: Organic Movements and Black Organic Movements, 2015
If you study my hand-built Organic Movements and Black Organic Movements carefully you can see that I work with the concave and convex curves. I love my free-modelled works, where I can let the works run wild. I stop and cut off the work and then continue the modelling in another direction, but on a closer look at the work, you can see that behind the object’s shape hides the balls. The curves go up and down and it’s like the balls are trying to move out of the object’s “skin”.
The Organic series explores patterns of broken or continuous connecting lines by the use of black transfers. By adding these decorations, I create contrast and change the expression of the white organic sculpture. The result is an abstract and highly spatial sculptural expression.
In my Black Organic Movements, by using black monochrome glaze, the particular shape of the sculpture is affected by reflections from its surroundings adding contrast to the shape of the object.
All my works are sanded until they are smooth, glazed, re-glazed and fired 3-4 times until the surface of the sculpture has a completely monochrome expression.
