Jane Norbury: Sphèroïdal, 2020

Sphèroïdal series, 2020, stoneware clays, gravels and oxides

Jane’s recent works question matter and balance in an equally fundamental way. These sculptures are inspired by the most primitive forms of life, organic tubes, nodules and spheres, using stoneware clays fired in reduction, deformed by pressure similar to the effect of strong weightlessness; sometimes frozen in a movement of torsion or convulsion, as if fossilized.

A strange poetic atmosphere emerges from Jane’s work, a questioning of the origin of life giving a preponderant place to movement, to the tension of the material, and to the natural attraction of rough clay in all its materiality; subjected to the rigour of reduction firing which reveals an archaic and dark beauty.
