The week’s news in the ceramic art world – June 21, 2022

✅ The Matres International Women’s Ceramic Festival opened their applications for this year’s event, which includes two contests – one exclusively for women ceramic artists. The festival takes place among the most beautiful areas in the world, the Amalfi coast. For three days, the cities of Cava de’ Tirreni and Vietri sul Mare, cities of ceramic tradition, will host exhibitions, conferences, workshops, guided tours, and more. Applications are due July 3, 2022. The application fee for the main award is €100 and includes registration with the Pandora Association.

🔥 Fondazione Iris Ceramica Group announces an International Art Prize dedicated to ceramics. The prize supports the work of ceramic professionals and offers the chance to the new generations of creative people to make their mark on the art and design world. The prize has two sections: under and over 25.

👌 Alice North, Halsey North, and Louise Allison Cort recently published Listening to Clay (Monacelli Press), the first book to present conversations with some of the most important living Japanese ceramic artists. Tracing the evolution of modern and contemporary craft and art in Japan, this groundbreaking volume highlights sixteen individuals whose unparalleled skill and creative brilliance have lent them an influence that far transcends national borders. An exhibition of works from all 16 artists featured in the book will be presented at Joan B Mirviss LTD this summer.

📙 Another book that came out at roughly the same time is the 2nd edition of Seeing Things: Collected Writing on Art, Craft and Design (Occasional Papers), by ceramicist Alison Britton. Alison Britton’s collected writings review the unstable place of craft in the spectrum of art and design. Now in a second edition, the essays included in Seeing Things reveal that ceramics, her central concern, is an exploratory field that reflects on itself, in dialogue with many other areas of inquiry such as gender and cultural studies.

🔥 Saint-Sulpice Céramique 2022, the 25th edition of a wonderful event celebrating ceramics will take place June 30 – July 3 in Paris, France. Over 100 artists will exhibit their works in the beautiful setting of Place Saint-Sulpice. The organizers will also host a series of lectures. This year’s theme is Portraits of clay.

📍 The first edition of the Delft Ceramics Days will take place later this week in the historical city center of Delft, the Netherlands. Around 60 artists from all over the world will show their work at the ceramics market. Another highlight of the event is The 36 Vases Parade exhibition at Terra Delft Gallery. Read more (pdf).

🏞 Céramystic à Way’s Mills will take place July 1-10 in the garden of the Rozynski Art Center, Quebec, and will feature the works of over 30 artists from all corners of the Canadian province.
