Katrina Schneider

Katrina Schneider was born in Germany in 1992 and now lives and works in Wien, Austria. After her craft education in ceramics, she studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Her work was displayed in 2022 in the Against Nature exhibition at MO.CO. Montpellier Contemporain, France.

Katrina Schneider focuses on creating and experimenting with thick melting masses that are stopped in motion, dripping and inflated. Her works are slimy and reminiscent of bodily fluids and secretions from living mechanisms. It is an interplay of geological background and biological surface. Together with their individual storylines, Katrina’s works function as parts of systems, representing human history and possible futures. They connect present fast-changing social issues, grievances, and transformations with archaic formations—geology and biology as contrasting elements of (especially) human influence on world processes.

“What I like about clay is that it is so fragile and sensitive; you really can observe it being alive. Like boggy ground on a rainy day, so muddy that the earth embraces you and pulls you in. And you stick together like you were each other’s parasite. Contrary and similar to this, the next sunshine, where the water withdraws from the ground and the earth forms cracks inside itself. It’s a talk of nature, and we’re standing right by it. The earth is breaking from our view. And it breaks progressively until we fall. But what do we do while we fall? And where do we hit?”
