Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramic Art at Alfred University, Alfred, NY

The School of Art and Design in the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is seeking candidates for The Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramic Art. The Turner Teaching Fellow will be an emerging artist with an MFA or equivalent degree. Prior teaching experience is welcome but not required. The fellowship is non-tenure track; it is renewable up to three years. A stipend is provided for professional development along with a studio space and full access to ceramic facilities.

Established in honor of Robert Chapman Turner, distinguished Professor Emeritus at Alfred, the Turner Teaching Fellowship is open to candidates working in all aspects of ceramic art that pursue inquiries into utility, pottery, the vessel, sculpture, the figure, architectural application, the decorative, installation and performance. Teaching responsibilities include a 2/2 teaching load at the undergraduate level. The candidate’s area of expertise will factor into the teaching assignments. Start date is August 2026.

The Division of Ceramic Art within the School of Art and Design at Alfred University has a distinguished history as a premier institution for education in the arts and fosters a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary environment for research and practice. The Division of Ceramic Art is comprised of six full-time faculty, a teaching fellowship, a rotating international chair, and three full time technicians. The scope of the Division of Ceramic Art is wide-ranging, embracing history and innovation, tradition and emerging forms of visual art. The material intensive curriculum develops skill and intellect through theory, technological research and creative practice. Undergraduate and graduate programs are strongly intertwined. In our two-year MFA program graduate students navigate wide-ranging practices in the visual arts.

Qualifications

Required:
• MFA or equivalent degree
• Emerging record of scholarly/creative productivity appropriate to teaching at the college level
• Ability to work collaboratively within the department, the school, the university, and the community
• To communicate with and mentor students on all levels
