Nasrin Iravani: Magnanimous Moment of Departure!, 2020

By experimenting with pottery, my work reframes historical sculptures from a contemporary, cross-cultural perspective. The organic objects of my recent art project reference figures and the human body while being positioned firmly in the world of sculptures. Moreover, my curiosity about the relationship between various forms of creative expression ranging from fine art and traditional craft to modern design helps me to make connections between the fields of art, craft and design. The sculptural forms highlight a relationship between the human body (derived from abstractions of human bodies on an appropriate scale), organic forms, and natural and synthetic processes. The objects I create are ambiguous in form and seemingly nonsensical in their finishes. With layers of glaze applied to the surface, they retain a decorative quality embedded in the history of functional ceramics.
