The shape of vessels is the most basic form of ceramics. Various artists in all times and places have tried to create vessels while closely relating to their respective cultures.
In conjunction with the Mashiko Museum Residency Program, this exhibition introduces the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art’s collection—which includes the works of modern masters, and the works of contemporary artists. Over 30 artists will exhibit their ceramic artworks. In this exhibition, we look at how the shape of the vessel is expressed in their works. The term “vessel” here does not necessarily mean functional wares. We are also paying attention to works that pursue the shape of the vessel (a shape that has a rim and is formed by the inner and outer shapes) and artists who understand the shape of vessels in a philosophical dimension by relating them to the process of creating works.
Twenty years have passed since the beginning of the 21st century, and the field of modern ceramics seems to have entered its full maturity. However, if you look at it from a universal perspective, i.e. vessel, you can see the aesthetic sense that has been inherited from the previous period, as well as the sensitivity that is emerging in the present age. Since the 20th century, what has changed and what hasn’t?
