Assistant Professor of Ceramics: 3D with Environmental Engagement at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA

Loyola Marymount University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Studio Art in Ceramics: 3D with Environmental Engagement for the 2023-2044 Academic Year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower and upper division courses in ceramics with a proven commitment to environmental engagement. Course content includes teaching diverse clay traditions across world cultures, drawing and clay, 3D foundations, ceramic sculpture, and wheel-throwing. While rooted in historical and contemporary clay, applicants should be able to provide leadership on issues of environmental and materials practice not just within ceramics but across the studios. The ideal candidate will provide guidance in curricular development within ceramics and the 3D area and be able to offer expertise and teach in one or more of the following additional 3D areas: Possible additional skills include sculpture, installation, welding, fiber arts, 3D digital technologies, approaches to fabrication and related creative activities.

The Department places a high priority on diversity, social justice, and inclusive pedagogy in fostering academic excellence. Candidates whose background, research activities, expertise or experiences will contribute to diversity within the Department are encouraged to apply. Candidates should show evidence of engagement with African American visual culture and/or the African diaspora; or Asian American visual culture and/or Asian diaspora; or Chicanx / Latinx visual culture and/or the Latinx diaspora; or Native/Indigenous visual culture and/or the arts of the Native/Indigenous diaspora.

The ideal candidate will also be able to forge connections and participate in service within the department of Art and Art History and with other areas across the university. Within the department, service component of the position includes: an expectation to maintain and oversee a dedicated Ceramics Studio and adjacent Kiln/Sculpture Yard with an emphasis on safe and sustainable processes, manage a budget, supervise students, staff and part-time faculty, provide oversight of the Adult Learners program through LMU Extension and possess a willingness to interact with programming in our Thomas P. Kelly Jr. Student Art Gallery.
