Kim Simonsson: Moss cabbage people is on view at Galerie NeC, Paris

September 8 – October 29, 2022

Sculptor Kim Simonsson lives and works at Fiskars Village in Finland, surrounded by a unique forest scenery. In his studio Simonsson hand builds ceramics sculptures, often children or animals. He uses old ceramic and craft techniques and combines them with a contemporary imagery and ready made objects.

In Simonsson’s exhibition “the Moss Cabbage People” at Galerie NeC the sculptor has used fresh vegetables to make plaster moulds. The cabbage grows from the sculptures’ clothing. The Moss Cabbage People are extremely self sufficient as they carry their food on them.

Kim Simonsson discovered the moss like surface after endless experimentation with the flocking technique. One day he decided to flock one of his sculptures that was painted in black with yellow nylon fiber. Soon enough the only green wasn’t the forest around his studio. Simonsson had made his first Moss figure.

In Spring 2022 Kim Simonsson participated the Lille3000 Utopia Festival in France. In a cooperation with the Festival organization and a local manufacturer Simonsson created his first large scale Moss People sculptures. Ten of his 4,5 meters high sculptures are greeting the people in Lille at la Rambla of Lille. They are inspired by the Nordic tales and the demanding nature in the North where the darkness surrounds everything for months.

In his exhibition in Paris Kim Simonsson introduces two parallel worlds. The green Moss Cabbage People are adjoined with his newest Silhouette sculptures. Reflecting the Nordic camos the Silhouettes are coated with black nylon fiber that make the figures’ three dimensional character disappear.

Kim Simonsson is participating to the Lyon Biennale 2022 with over twenty Moss people sculptures.
