Nuala O’Donovan: Teasel Series, 2011-2022

Based on the flower of the Teasel Plant, a type of thistle with a dense and complex flower/seed head. One element of the flower pattern was isolated – a petal in a pointed cone shape. Using the principals of fractal geometry – regular irregularity, self-similarity, and a response within the form to events during the making of the work. The pattern follows and accepts the imperfections in the handmade pattern so that it contains a narrative of the making process, and the outcome of each piece is unique.
