2012_10_10 Tyler School of Art exterior

Assistant or Associate Professor of Instruction, Ceramics at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA

Posted on January 17, 2024 – position open until filled

The Ceramics Program in the Department of Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University, invites applications for a full-time, two-year, non-tenure track faculty appointment beginning in Fall 2024, with the possibility of renewal.

The Art Department encompasses a wide range of philosophies and practices, ranging from cutting-edge contemporary methods to historic processes, and is grounded in a philosophy of social commitment within the ever-evolving fields of hybrid practices for creative investigation and expression. Ceramics Program practices encompass vessel production, sculpture, installation, social practice, and digital fabrication. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of ceramic materials and processes with a demonstrated ability to position clay within contemporary art and craft discourses. Candidates who can expand beyond the institutional canon of ceramics to include a broader social, political, cultural, or artistic context are particularly desirable. The ideal candidate will be influential in shaping the future of the discipline. A professional exhibition record is required.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching. The position requires teaching a variety of ceramics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The workload is comprised of teaching and instruction, and service to the program, department, and college. Position responsibilities also include mentoring students, serving on MFA thesis committees, engaging in curriculum development, contributing to department and program meetings, and participation in end-of-semester reviews with students. Presence on campus at least three days per week is expected. Since 1935, Tyler School of Art has offered students the combination of a world-renowned faculty and the resources of Temple University, a large, urban research institution. Tyler’s programs encompass a wide range of areas in the study of art, design, art history, art education, and architecture. In each program, students work in small learning communities, while also benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities, a rigorous curriculum, and a large, diverse campus community.

Philadelphia has deep artistic traditions, a wide range of cultural organizations, and a thriving contemporary art scene. Beyond Philadelphia, the city makes for an affordable and convenient home base to access other major cities with flourishing arts, culture, and architectural communities such as New York City and Washington, DC.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have an MFA, professional exhibition record, demonstrated teaching excellence and an ability to communicate and work effectively, collegially, and collaboratively with students, faculty and administrators. A minimum of three years of full-time college-level teaching experience, or the equivalent, is preferred.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Temple University is an equal opportunity, equal access, affirmative action employer committed to increasing diversity and inclusivity in both its community and its curricula. Women, people of color, and other candidates who can contribute to this goal are strongly encouraged to apply.
