The Department of Art at Pacific University invites applications for an instructor of ceramics beginning Fall 2024. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated proficiency with the following: functional and sculptural ceramics, wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and electric firings. Teaching load consists of 12 credits during the academic year. This includes two courses in hand-building and two in wheel throwing, and studio management duties. Classes meet in-person twice per week on the Forest Grove campus. Additional responsibilities may include management of work study students. This is a part-time faculty position in Art with 12-credits of teaching responsibility in the 24-25 academic year. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining a positive, safe, and supportive educational experience for undergraduate students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach two courses in ceramics hand-building to 16-18 students.
• Teach two courses in ceramics wheel throwing to 16-18 students.
• Provide a syllabus for all courses that outline learning outcomes, course policies, due dates, readings and assignments; and university policies.
• Provide students with regular feedback on their performance in class and submit mid-term and final grades.
• Maintain and communicate all safety protocols for the ceramics studio.
• Maintain a functional studio space that provides students with a positive learning environment.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
• Order raw materials and supplies to support all courses.
• Maintain regular hours outside of class time to meet with students.
• Collaborate with fellow colleagues in art to support a robust art program.
• Work within a pre-determined operating budget.
• Attend department meetings.

JOB SCOPE:
As the sole faculty member in ceramics, this position is primarily responsible for the effective teaching of courses in art and, therefore, developing the content and expectations for those courses, attending class meetings, and supporting student learning.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:
Position has the option of hiring 1-2 student workers to assist in the management of the ceramics studio. Student workers need regular direction and feedback on their performance, but can work independently once hired and trained.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
MFA preferred. Prior ceramics teaching experience required. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated proficiency with the following: functional and sculptural ceramics, wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and electric firings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:
The successful candidate will possess demonstrated proficiency with the following:
• Functional and sculptural ceramics, wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and electric firings.
• Communicates with students, faculty, staff and the public appropriate to the age of the individual served.
• Builds on basic learning and carries it from one situation to another.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem solving and decision-making.
• Asks questions and seeks assistance.
• Takes responsibility to eliminate the source of problems.
• Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and staff.
• Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job.
• Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, and questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
• Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ceramics studio includes student workspaces, multiple ceramics wheels, tools, glazing room and spray hood, and multiple kilns. No overtime. Minimal travel possible for supplies acquisition. All classes meet in-person two days/week.
