Ross Junior Owusu

Ross Junior Owusu is a Ghanaian mixed-media artist working between the United States and Ghana, whose practice spans ceramics, performance, and assemblage. Rooted in contemporary craft, his work examines identity, migration, and cultural memory, focusing on how identities are carried, reshaped, reconstructed across shifting geographies and asking what is picked up, and what is left behind in our Cultural journeys.

Owusu received his MFA in Studio Art from Wayne State University in Detroit and a BA in Industrial Art (Ceramics) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. His work draws from West African visual languages, particularly Krobo bead traditions, which he reinterprets through modular, large-scale ceramic forms that function as vessels of movement, memory, and belonging.

His work has been featured in national and international exhibitions, including the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Annual Exhibition and Multicultural Fellowship Exhibition, as well as solo and two-person exhibitions across the United States. His work has been recognized through awards and residencies including the Watershed Zenobia Award, Penland School of Craft, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts.

Alongside his studio practice, Owusu is an educator committed to material-based inquiry and culturally grounded teaching. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Art and Program Lead at Talladega College (AL), where he teaches ceramics, design, and art history, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to making and critical engagement with contemporary art practice.
