Anca Ion: Sponges, Kelps, Stones and Minerals, 2025-2026

The Sponges feature contrasting textures. The structures are made with numerous finger-like protrusions arranged densely at the top and bottom of the composition. At the center, a rough, highly porous form made of clay and porcelain suggests a sponge-like structure.

The Kelps (Spinocella) are brutalist and organic ceramic sculptures. Their rustic, rough textures recall natural elements and plant branches, combined with an abstract architectural quality. Dark surfaces, subtle metallic effects, and glazed highlights create a play of light and shadow across the cylindrical cavities and folds.

Geological heritage creates a link between the history of humanity and the history of the planet. Minerals, rocks, fossils, and other geological formations allow us to understand the origin and evolution of the Earth, the processes that have shaped it, past and present climates and landscapes, and the origin and evolution of life.

Throughout the history of the Earth, many geological processes have created minerals, rocks, and aggregates that have been transformed into reliefs and landscapes. These materials are both the product and the record of the Earth’s evolution, and they are a heritage that should be managed responsibly to ensure its conservation.

In these works, textures help visualize and highlight the essence of rocks and stones. Inside them, conglomerates simulate minerals. I use refractory clay for its roughness and its similarity to natural textures, and glass to introduce color.

The works aim to raise awareness of the need for a better and more shared relationship with the environment. They draw attention to the importance of minerals as the basis of the Earth and reflect on the need to use natural resources in a controlled way, rather than through uncontrolled abuse.
