Lucy Morrow: Ways to Fix, 2012-2014

Split lines and binds

There is an archaeological dimension to the work, and more specifically, one could say that these ceramic fragments are constantly trying to be rebuilt. Mentally, like in the piece “to Repair.” The viewer attempts to reconstruct what would be the origin of these objects. In some ways, they are like relics – I sometimes consider them as possible containers.

The tautness of the rubber and the duality of my pieces creates opposition. Opposition of forms that are seen as complementary but are indeed often a duplication made from the same mold. And there is the tension of these serrated edges that interact but never quite fit, interfering with the lines produced by the black oxides or rubber bands. Numerous line drawings illuminate the surface but perturb us when we constantly want to find the logic in them. Tied Box consists of two cylindrical fragments, where the presence of holes on the surface suggests a function, and the gesture of tying both elements together references the expressive slipcasting techniques; all of this brings us immediately to the question of container.
