The week’s news in the ceramic art world – July 26, 2022

📌 The rules for participating in the 62nd edition of the Faenza Prize – International Competition of Contemporary Art Ceramics have been published, but registration begins only on September 30. The Faenza Prize exhibition will open on July 1st, 2023.

👌 Registration is open for Oxford Ceramics Program Fall courses, including online courses such as Form and Function with Ruth Easterbrook and Experimental Photography on Clay with Anne Eder. Please note that there’s a waitlist for most programs.

🌿 The Australian Ceramics Association is now accepting applications for the 10th edition of the Australian Ceramics Open Studios (ACOS), an annual, nationwide, weekend event that celebrates clay, community and creativity. Applications are open only for Australia-based artists.

✨ Banff Centre (Alberta, Canada) recently announced a new Visual Arts residency open for applications for early 2023. The Emerging Banff Artist in Residence 2023 is an immersive program of studio practice, creative exploration, and critical feedback and mentorship for visual artists of all ages in the early stages of their careers. This residency is for emerging artists who have completed university-level training in visual arts (preferably within the last five years).

🗨 To celebrate the publication of Listening to Clay: Conversations with Contemporary Japanese Ceramic Artists, and the accompanying gallery exhibition at Joan B Mirviss LTD, authors Alice and Halsey North and Louise Allison Cort will discuss in depth their personal relationships with these sixteen artists that formed the basis for this book. Join the online gallery talk taking place later today at 5 pm EST.

🔥 The Australian Ceramics Triennale just finished a few days ago – the event featured lectures, exhibitions, masterclasses, and many other special events. / The 3rd International Porcelain Biennale opened a week ago at the Albrechtsburg Castle, in Meissen, Germany. 25 artists working with porcelain are showing their work. / The International Ceramics Fair Oldenburg will take place August 6-7 in the historic city of Oldenburg, Germany. Over 100 artists will show & sell their work.

⚫ The ceramic art community is sad to learn about the passing of Antonio Vivas Zamarano, editor of Revista Cerámica, Madrid, and Ogata Kamio (b. 1949), Japanese ceramic artist. May their work always be remembered and cherished.

✍️ The Craft Council of BC & the NWCF just announced the launch of a Ceramic Marks Registry for British Columbia, a growing online database of ceramic marks and maker biographies for ceramicists working in BC, past and present. The Registry already contains over 500+ makers due to the diligent work of researchers Debra Sloan and Allan Collier. It’s a wonderful initiative that other organizations can replicate in their own countries. Congratulations!
