The week’s news in the ceramic art world – March 14, 2023

• Applications are open for CERCO 2023, the 18th International Ceramics Competition, which will take place in Zaragoza, Spain. The contest is open to all contemporary artists of any age, individuals or members of groups, and without restrictions on theme or nationality, who use ceramic as an artistic medium. Application deadline: June 11.

• Registrations are also open for the 30th Competition of Contemporary Ceramic Art “Mediterraneo” in Grottaglie, Italy. Applications are due May 14.

• NCECA 2023 – Current, the 57th Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, starts tomorrow in Cincinnati, Ohio. Current promises a wide range of experiences and exhibitions for everyone who wants to learn about and experience the continuing evolution of humankind’s most enduring art form. The conference is anticipating an attendance of around 5,000 artists, designers, educators, and scholars. • Mudflat Studios (Boston, MA) invites artists to their Year-Long Artist Residency. This highly competitive program provides a free private studio space with access to Mudflat’s facility, a monthly materials stipend, a monthly housing stipend, and opportunities to teach and sell work. Applications are due April 16.

?• The Banff Centre (Alberta, Canada) invites artists to their Artist in Residence summer program. Designed for visual artists to focus on their practice in a supportive learning environment, participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time and cultivate new directions in their work. The last day to apply is March 22.

• Flower City Arts Center (Rochester, NY) invites artists to their Artist in Residence programs in ceramics, photography and digital arts, and printmaking & book arts. Applications are due April 15.

• York Art Gallery celebrates women artists in an exciting new ceramics display, ‘Wall of Women,’ in the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA). The exhibition is free to visit and highlights the innovation and creativity of women working with clay from the early 20th century to the present day. York Art Gallery’s Centre of Ceramic Art is home to the work of 675 named artists.

• The Australian Design Centre opened applications for the inaugural MAKE AWARD: Biennial Prize for Innovation in Australian Craft and Design. The winner will receive a cash prize of $35,000 with a second prize of $10,000, making it the richest non-acquisitive prize for craft and design in Australia. The award is open to Australia-based designers/makers working across all disciplines, including ceramics, glass, furniture/woodwork, metalwork, textiles and fiber, and contemporary jewelry.

• MIC Faenza just announced a series of online artist talks in connection with the 62nd Faenza Prize. Every Tuesday, from March 14th to May 9th, at 4 PM CET, the artists selected and competing for the 62nd Faenza Prize will discuss their work in an online meeting.

• What’s On View: Within + Without is on view at Unit London, London / The Weight of Clay: From Collector to Collection is on view at Art Gallery of Burlington, Burlington, ON / Shinichi Sawada: Messengers is on view at James Cohan, New York / Maggie Wells: On the Nature of Things is on view at Roman and Williams Guild Gallery, New York / Owen Rye: Abstracts at Vitrine is on view at Craft Victoria, Melbourne / Shawn Panepinto: Old Dog, New Tricks is on view at Gallery 224, Cambridge, MA / Shona Rae: Converse Subversives is on view at Alberta Craft Gallery, Edmonton / Halima Cassell: From the Earth is on view at Watt’s Gallery, Compton / Decentering in Ceramics is on view at Richard Saltoun Gallery, Rome / Painted Clay: Wada Morihiro and Modern Ceramics of Japan opens this week at Joan B Mirviss LTD, New York
