Robert Dawson and Richard Slee: Problem Pieces is on view at Musée Ariana, Geneva
June 18, 2021 – January 9, 2022
Robert Dawson and Richard Slee take an eccentric look at the world. They have long drawn their inspiration from the history of ceramics and decorative art, without ever resorting to nostalgia or aestheticism.
Though their ceramic expressions differ considerably – Slee proposes composite objects with bright and shiny surfaces, whereas Dawson explores the texture of raw clay on canvas – both artists constantly question everyday life, challenging the commonplace and shaking up conventions. They have long drawn their inspiration from the history of ceramics and decorative art, without ever resorting to either nostalgia or aestheticism. While the two artists share a focus on subverting found motifs and/or objects, their critical artistic discourse takes them in contrasting directions, each filled with humour.
The Musée Ariana presents in this show a panoply of artworks – amongst them a certain number directly inspired from the museum’s collection, sometimes unsettling, which stir up preconceived ideas and offer an original perspective on the world.
