The week’s news in the ceramic world

❤️ Join artists Jane Millar and Kim L Pace, with Tessa Peters acting as chair, for Clay in Conversation 2: Body, the second in a series of curated conversations curated by artist Julia Ellen Lancaster, presenting artists working with clay and ceramics. Each conversation centres on a specific theme – acting as a lens through which the artists will present a single piece of work or project. The conversations offer the opportunity to dig deeper into a single work, exploring it formally, materially and conceptually. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

📌 Argillà Italia, a famous festival dedicated to ceramics took place this last weekend in Faenza. The event featured the works of over 200 ceramic artists along the streets of the historic city center, as well as numerous concurrent exhibitions, concerts, presentations, workshops and guided tours. After a four-year break, it’s wonderful to see such a large event dedicated to ceramics taking place. 👌 Fieldstation 2022 – a process exhibition and residency with open studios by and with S L A M and invited artists is taking place this week at Ifö Center Konsthall, in Bromölla, Sweden. Through site-specific works, staging, re-enactments, performances and film, the artists will develop new perspectives on the history of Ifö (a famous Swedish manufacturer of sanitary ceramics), and the cultural heritage that characterizes the place and the people who live here today.

⚫ The ceramic art community is sad to learn about the passing of János Probsnter, the founder and director for almost the first 40 years, of the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary. Under his leadership, the studio became known throughout the world as a catalyst for creativity – and served as an example for other international ceramic art centres. May his work always be remembered and cherished.

⚗ The 50th Congress and General Assembly of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) will take place next week in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme Melting Pot: From the alchemist’s crucible to the cultural crucible. The 5-day program will consist of academic and professional conferences, debates, and visits to national and international exhibitions. Read more in the brochure (pdf).

🎓 The Clay Studio is offering 28 adult classes during the Fall term at their new South Kensington location – 1425 North American Street, Philadelphia. Join a vibrant and inclusive community where people of all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels can learn, connect, and create art side-by-side.

⛩ Joan B Mirviss Ltd will host an online gallery talk about Ogawa Machiko’s work on September 15. To mark her fourth exhibition at the gallery, the panelists will discuss Ogawa Machiko’s groundbreaking career and her trailblazing path to achieving critical success within Japan and internationally. They will examine her enduring legacy in the field of Japanese contemporary ceramics and the possibilities she has uncovered in her lifetime exploration of clay.
