Karla García

Karla García is a Mexican born, American-based artist that creates installations and sculptures with clay, found objects, and other symbolic materials to her Mexican heritage and migration. Her research-based artwork is a connecting point from her own history, ancient histories, and how these shape her identity, noting that, “I hope that my work can be a catalyst for the public to experience a little bit of our human history in unexpected ways.”

García is a Professor of Art and ceramics assistant at the Dallas College – Mountain View Campus. She completed an MFA degree in Ceramics and a Museum Education Certificate from the University of North Texas in May of 2019. She was awarded the Top Prize at the Sixth Annual Artspace 111 Regional Exhibition. García was selected as a visiting artist at the Dallas Museum of Art where she created a four-month interactive installation titled Carrito de Memorias which was selected to be exhibited at a Latin American Fine Art Competition in New York. García recently attended an international artist residency in St. Raphael, France where she began the exploration of her current work Home and Land Project which was recently exhibited at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

  • Irit Ovadia Rosenberg would be the first to tell you that she never imagined establishing a ceramic practice amongst the towering pines of New York State’s Catskills mountains, far from the madding crowd of her native New York City. Nestled between the conifers and surrounded by wild fern, her studio barn and cottage gallery provide a serene backdrop that lend her substantive, tactile assemblages an even greater sense of expanded space and time.

In her latest assemblage series, the artist hangs draped ceramic forms alongside the brutalist, rusted remains of farm machinery from bygone days, creating an uneasy yet harmonious co-existence. Artist and author Lilianne Milgrom sat down with Irit to discuss the nature and evolution of these unique groupings.
