Mel Arsenault: Shifting Histories AKA Curatorial Starter Kit, 2017-2019

By animating miniature installations of objects representing different cultural spheres and eras, the intention was to reverse the actions of exclusion and categorization sustained by patriarchal systems of thought throughout art history. I was also concerned about the issue of size which brought into consideration the quantity of materials needed to make artworks; the privilege of having access to a studio to make artworks; the logistics of moving artworks; the space these objects would occupy in their later life. Why go large when at this size they contained the amount of information needed to convey meaning?

Miniature installations and video: 250 individual ceramics pieces, glass skins, stoneware, porcelain, terracotta, local clay, approx. 25x20x25cm
