Rūta Šipalytė: Mark My Rothko, 2021-2022

Mark Rothko has said: “A painting is not a picture of an experience, but is the experience”. As a part of my Mark My Rothko series, I had an extraordinary opportunity to paint live with pigments on my ceramic object in front of Mark Rothko’s original painting at Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavplis, Latvia. This experience demonstrated the extent to which the quality of the artwork can be elevated by creating live next to the one of the most famous artworks of abstract expressionism. All ceramic objects in the Mark My Rothko series are influenced by distinct Mark Rothko paintings.
