Malene Hartmann Rasmussen: Fieldwork – In the footsteps of Gertrud Kudielka is on view at Hjorths Fabrik, Rønne

Hjorths Fabrik is pleased to announce Malene Hartmann Rasmussen’s exhibition, ‘Fieldwork—In the footsteps of Gertrud Kudielka’, featuring works created by the artist during her stay at the Hjorths Fabrik in 2022.
The Bornholm ceramics factories have produced a sea of animal figures throughout the ages—from Hjorth’s own Gertrud Kudielka’s folk art-inspired animals to Hans Ancher Wolfsen’s octopuses for Søholm and Knud Basse’s bear cubs. And since the animal often appears as the main character in Malene Hartmann Rasmussen’s works, it was precisely the animal that became the focal point of the work stay at Hjorths Fabrik.
In addition to looking for inspiration in Hjorth’s Fabrik collection, the animals at Melstedgaard were also visited weekly, where Malene could be seen sitting in the field or the stable and modeling. The animals’ anatomy, movements and behavior patterns found their way into the more elaborate works she created back in the workshop at Hjorths Fabrik.
During the work stay, winter turned to spring, and buds transformed into leaves and flowers in the old garden at Hjorths Fabrik. Hjorths Fabrik manager Karina Skibby threw a series of jars in a masterpiece style based on Malene’s own designs, which were subsequently used as a canvas for a series of works inspired by the garden.
The exhibition was created with support from the Statens Kunstfond, the Augustinus Foundation, and the Sparekassen Bornholms Fond. Hjorths Fabrik is a historic ceramic factory, part of the Bornholms Museum.
