Nitsa Meletopoulos: Grotto-Modo is on view at She BAM! Gallery, Leipzig

January 8 – February 18, 2022

The first solo show of Nitsa Meletopoulos GROTTO-MODO at She BAM! lets you dive headlong in the surprising, chimeric and expressive world of the artist. Mixing contemporary pottery and sculpture, pop and tradition, natural and artificial, sausages and lemons – unexpected combinations will follow you through your whole visit of the show and bring you to aesthetic ecstasy.

Using and mixing multiple technics Nitsa is questioning the understanding of shapes, what is organic, and how the forms are impacting our perception. Bold colours and extravagance will knock you out of reality and will place you in a whole different world. A world where landscapes, objects, nature and supernatural are fused and organically co-existing.

She BAM! is an art gallery that exclusively represents women artists, an all-women-gallery. The program is international, the practices represented are varied and the desire is to join forces through the diversity that current artistic practices can represent.

Nitsa Meletopoulos’ practice evolves between contemporary art, contemporary ceramic, sculpture, and design. Through maximalism, grotesque, and those cumulative styles that overflow, she develops an aesthetics of excess. Mixing styles and techniques (like throwing, molding, or 3D printing), playing with pop, historical and traditional references, she jumps between the natural and the artificial, the supernatural and the psychedelic. Nitsa Metelopoulos plays with bold choices of colors, creating strange organic pieces that are somehow disturbing the perception. Entering Nitsa Meletopoulos’ world is like entering into a contemporary cabinet of curiosities full of mysteries and surprises.

Before studying art at the Beaux-Arts d’Avignon in France, Nitsa Meletopoulos studied psychoanalysis at Montpellier University of Sciences. Later on, during a residency in Leipzig, she started to work with clay and sculpture. She lived in Leipzig for 4 years where she started to work for a ceramic factory in parallel to managing the Franco-German artistic platform “Fugitif”. In 2018, she returned to France to strengthen her ceramic technical skills in the school « Maison de la céramique » based in Dieulefit. Now, she lives now and works in Burgundy and collaborates with galleries in Paris, Leipzig, Madrid, Los Angeles, and New York.
