Adjunct faculty position – Ceramics at University of Houston – Clear Lake

Adjunct faculty position – Ceramics at University of Houston – Clear Lake, Houston, TX

Posted on July 4, 2025

University of Houston-Clear Lake invites applications for an adjunct position in Art and Design, in the studio area of ceramics. The successful applicants must be able to teach beginning to advanced levels of ceramics – demonstrating capabilities with hand-building and wheel throwing, glazing, and kiln firing. Applicants should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness. This position will start in Fall of 2025.

Founded in 1974, UHCL is a four-year institution, offering undergraduate, graduate and select doctoral degrees. The university is located next to a nature preserve, and is also adjacent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center and 30 miles from both Galveston Island and Downtown Houston. The Art Studios are well-equipped for a variety of studio media. Faculty in this program are dedicated to their own practice as well as engaging in mentorship of students in their respective studio areas.

The Art and Design Program at UHCL is looking for part-time faculty to teach courses in Ceramics. Courses include both beginning to advanced levels – covering a variety of approaches, materials, and processes including hand-building, wheel-throwing, mold-making, glazing, and kiln firing. Both beginning to advanced classes investigate an exploration of contemporary and historical approaches. Advanced Ceramics centers more around the investigation of personal themes and concepts.

Most studio-based ARTS classes meet in person, and are typically 6 contact hours a week (depending on the class), over a 15-week semester. Studio courses have an average enrollment of 15 students per class. Adjunct instructors are responsible for preparing course syllabi, instructing students, maintaining contact through Canvas and email, and submitting grades at the conclusion of the semester.

Applicants who have expertise in other studio areas (such as drawing, 3D design, etc) should mention this in their application letter.

Required Qualifications:
• All applicants must have an MFA or MA degree in Studio Art with an emphasis on ceramics. While an MFA is preferred, applicants with an MA in Studio Art (emphasis in ceramics) will also be considered.
• A minimum of 2 years teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

Application Requirements:
Applicants accepted only online at Applicants accepted only online at Adjuncts – College of Human Sciences and Humanities AND Email Associate Professor of Communication & Studio Arts, Lauren Kussro (Kussro@UHCL.edu), to make her aware of your application for this particular position within the Adjunct pool.

In addition to a fully completed employment application, please attach:
• Cover Letter describing interest and qualifications
• Current curriculum vitae, with a link to a portfolio or website, including personal work as well as student work.
• Name, title, and full contact information of three professional references

Review of completed applications begins immediately and continues until position is filled. All adjunct positions are filled based on course availability and need. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would like to be added to the UHCL AD adjunct pool for continued consideration in future.

The University of Houston System and its universities are an Equal Opportunity Institution.
