Ceramics Technician at the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT

Posted on March 13, 2024 – Position open until filled

Assumes responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Art School’s Ceramics studios and equipment. Serves as a resource to other technicians, faculty, staff and students regarding use of the Ceramics Facilities and equipment. Complies with and enforces facility access policies and procedures. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s brand, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the University of Hartford’s core business – the education of students.

Job Duties
This job description of the job is for identification and administrative purposes only. It is not intended to be a complete statement of all duties, which may be assigned by the supervisor according to varying needs.

Description of Key Responsibility: Assists with and provides feedback to students with regard to project completion. Maintains awareness of trends and advances within the field of Ceramics. Maintains departmental inventories of instructional supplies and equipment, orders supplies as necessary and appropriate. Researches, recommends and purchases equipment as necessary, within the constraints of an established budget in an effort to ensure prudent fiscal management and effective departmental operations. *

Description of Key Responsibility: Provides safety awareness and training in ceramics programs. Acts as a positive role model in the safe handling of materials and equipment. Trains students in the safe and proper firing of gas and electric kilns. Coordinates a kiln-firing schedule for the department.

Description of Key Responsibility: Provides regular feedback and updates to the supervisor on conditions and events within the Ceramics Department.

Description of Key Responsibility: Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with the Facilities Department as well as necessary external vendors to schedule maintenance and ensure proper clean-up of the ceramics studio. Assumes responsibility for the understanding of, and adherence to, Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety and health standards. *

Description of Key Responsibility: Performs other related duties as assigned.

Formal Education:
Bachelors Degree Required

Work Experience:
• Stockroom or warehouse
• High dust, dirt, grease environment
• Requires safety training and/or protective devices
• Requires exposure to moving machinery and/or vehicles
• Works with poor ventilation or with regular exposure to odors
• Regular exposure to chemicals and solvents
