The week’s news in the ceramic art world – June 7, 2022

💬 This month, NYU and University of Westminster’s Ceramics Research Centre will co-host a series of free webinars on contemporary ceramics: Why clay? Why now? / Fragments and Dissonance / Context and Belonging / What is the Artwork? The Clay Seminars invite key thinkers and practitioners in the arts to reflect in a series of June seminars based on provocations that are directed to examine this moment in clay practice, from both curatorial and artistic perspectives. Each of the Zoom webinars will last one hour. Registration is free!

🍀 After a two-year hiatus, the International Ceramic Art Fair (ICAF) returns to the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, with an exciting roster of artists and galleries. The fair runs June 9-19, 2022, and features work by top Canadian and international artists. Visitors can view and purchase new work and attend talks, tours, and performances, online and in person. More than half the programs taking place during the 10-day fair are free to the public. Make sure to register for the virtual conversations and tours.

👉 The XV International Biennial of Ceramics Manises starts later this week in the town of Manises, Valencia, Spain. The event has two categories: Art Ceramics and Product Design (winners will be announced on June 10th), and includes several exhibitions, lectures and film screenings.

🏅 Congratulations to Officine Saffi (Milan) for hosting Clay Sessions this week, a free program of courses and workshops designed both for beginners and professionals. Opening up the gallery space for accessible workshops is an idea that’s easy to replicate and with a far-reaching impact on a community.

🔥 Ceramics Classes London invites artists on July 9th to the opening of their new studio in Barnes (19a Barnes High Street, London), which features new pottery wheels, hand-building tables, and an upstairs gallery. To RSVP and inquire about membership, please send an email at info@ceramicsclasseslondon.com

📌 The Ceramics Market of Saint-Remy-Lés-Chevreuse will take place this weekend in the small village of Saint-Remy-Lés-Chevreuse, Yvelines, France.

🌄 If you happen to be in Paris this summer, make sure to visit Touching the fire. Women ceramicists of Japan, a wonderful exhibition hosted by the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet. The exhibition features an impressive and prominent selection of works made by female ceramic artists born in Japan.

🍹 What are your plans for the summer? Are you participating in a symposium or a summer workshop? Let me know! I plan on writing about summer residencies, symposiums and workshops sometime in August. I’m looking forward to your emails at vasi@ceramicsnow.org
