The week’s news in the ceramic art world – July 5, 2022

July is the perfect month to hit the road and discover a wealth of different ceramic events taking place all over the world. We have just featured two of these events in Ceramics Now:
• The XV International Biennial of Ceramics, Manises, 2022 – featuring the works of 21 artists, selected from over 300 applications. The main prize of the competition was awarded to Rafael Jiménez Chacón.
• Premio Grottaglie 2022 – the 29th Contemporary Ceramic Competition. The main prize was awarded to Margherita Grasselli.

The New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum is accepting exhibition proposals. Any individual artist or group of creators is welcome to submit their application for an exhibition at this renowned museum in Taiwan. The exhibitions will be held from 2024 to 2025. Applications are free, but the winning artists are responsible for the shipping of the pieces.

There are a few more days left to apply for the XII Vendrell Ceramics Biennial 2022. The event will take place from November 2, 2023, to January 14, 2023, in El Vendrell, Catalonia, Spain. Applications are free and open internationally.

On the contrary, ancient artworks are the foundation of our modern visual and cultural language; something that contemporary art continues to build off of. This relationship is inherent in Carlos Enrique Prado’s Recycling Piles series in his newest exhibition Tautologies at the Kendall Art Center, a collection of ceramic sculptures that are composed of repeating human figures, assembled into what he calls columns, stacks, and piles.”

Guangzhen Zhou, a ceramic artist, writer and educator living in California, recently concluded an European road trip to discover iconic ceramics from around the world. He’s currently working on the English version of his book, which will include information about famous ceramic towns, ancient ceramics, traditional pottery and more. I recommend scrolling through his Facebook page to see his fabulous insights into the best-preserved ceramic cultures.

The American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) will host an artist talk with artist in residence Colby Charpentier, who will discuss recent work and future directions. This talk marks the closing event of his 2021-2022 AMOCA residency. Registration is free.
