Andrea Scholze: A Brief Moment in Time, 2018

The exhibition “A Brief Moment in Time” at Østfold Kunstsenter (ØKS) in Fredrikstad, Norway in 2018, displayed wall pieces, sculpture and an installation environment in the form of a greenhouse filled with ceramic plantlike objects made from black clay. Common theme amongst the works were that they all were unfulfilled in a way. The wall pieces show part of a process, inspired by the inner walls one can use when building a large sculpture in clay. The structures that start to form in the building process, like an inner skeleton, which then gets hidden within the finished sculpture. With inspiration from these she made them as their own finished pieces. Many of the forms are built from a stoneware clay which is reminiscent of concrete, due to her fascination of brutalist architecture with its monumental and raw expression. In the exhibition space there is also a canine looking creature laying on the floor, “Temporary being” (2018), unglazed, and made from the same concrete-looking clay.

“When I made the work “Minnet om noe som var» (Memory of Something Past) in 2017 I wanted to stop in the middle of the process, but I also wanted to finish the work as planned. I finished the work, but I always felt there was something interesting occurring in the middle of the process as well, when the work still was unfished. I went back to explore this for the exhibition at ØKS and allowed the sculpture “Temporary Being” to be incomplete this time, frozen in the middle of the process.”
