The Cocoon Clouds are the largest og my sculptures. They were inspired by looking at cocoon structures and gradually the pieces have become more biomorphic and anthropomorphic so that the work feels alive. They are the most technically challenging pieces to construct, fire and glaze. The earlier works such as Sprouting Limitless Cloud were inspired by Dutch Golden Age painting seen at The National Gallery, London where Jacob van Ruisdale’s large cloud expanses dominate his landscape paintings creating an air of obscurity. The same tension I have tried to achieve with the Cocoon Clouds where there is optimism combined with dark undertones.
