A Proper Send-Off is on view at The Clay Studio, Philadelphia

August 28 – October 3, 2021

The Clay Studio presents their last exhibition at their Old City location, โ€œA Proper Send-Off – an exhibition and benefit auction highlighted by important works gifted by long-term supporters. Led by a significant group of works from Helen Druttโ€™s collection, โ€œA Proper Send-Offโ€ also includes unique pieces generously gifted by Barbara Horowitz, Larry & Mickey Magid, Brian Harding, Kathryn Narrow, and Bobbie Adams, among others. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the care and display of โ€œThe Clay Studio Collection,โ€ which features the works of talented artists who have contributed to the success and longevity of The Clay Studioโ€™s nearly 50-year storied history. โ€œThe Clay Studio Collectionโ€ will be on display for the first time once The Clay Studio relocates to 1425 N. American Street later this winter. http://sendoff.givesmart.com/

The works donated by Philadelphia collector Helen Drutt feature a wide range of pieces from artists around the globe whose work she championed. Notable pieces include โ€œOpen Vesselโ€ by William Daley, who taught ceramics in Philadelphia for over 40 years and whose work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and many other public and private collections. Participants can also bid on a large vessel by British ceramicist Nicholas Arroyave Portela. His works can be found in collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, U.K., the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, U.K., and others. Additionally, the late Philadelphia-native Lizabeth Stewartโ€™s โ€œMonkey Ballโ€ shows her style of creating larger-than-life, hand-built ceramic sculptures of animals with eerily human characteristics.

โ€œA Proper Send-Offโ€ also offers unique works generously donated by several longtime supporters. Among the striking donations from Barbara Horowitz is a pair of Jun Kaneko cups, providing a rare chance to own a small version of this prominent artistโ€™s typically monumental work. Donor Avalie
Saperstein contributed a piece by Philadelphia artist Paula Winokur. Robert Wallner donated two figural boxes by world-renowned ceramicist Andrea Gill, whose work is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, and many other public and private collections. These are just some of the works that collectors can look forward to bidding on while supporting this thriving and important local art institution.

โ€œA Proper Send-Offโ€ is an exhibition of almost 100 works of art, ranging in price point and style. Items will be available for bids and viewing through GiveSmart dot com. For the final day of the auction on October 2, The Clay Studio will host a Farewell to Old City, a special closing reception where people can tour the old building and make their final bids. Friends can gather to share stories and reminisce while photographers and videographers capture their best memories of The Clay Studio.
