The week’s news in the ceramic world – October 4, 2022

We just published the 2023 calendar of ceramic competitions, biennales, festivals, and fairs. There are currently 15 events scheduled for 2023, including four international ceramic competitions with ongoing applications:

62nd Faenza Prize – International Biennial of Contemporary Ceramic Art (Faenza, Italy) – Applications are due December 12, 2022. Registration is free. Prizes up to €25,000.
5th International Ceramics Triennial UNICUM 2023 (Ljubljana, Slovenia) – Applications are due December 1, 2022. There is no registration fee.
2023 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize (New York, US) – Applications are due October 25, 2022. There is no entry fee. Prizes up to €10,000.
Terralha 2023 – European Ceramic Festival (Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, France). Aplications are due January 15, 2023. If selected, you must be present during the festival at your exhibition spot. Participation fee: €150.
The 2022 International Coffee Cup Competition (New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan). Applications are due October 20, 2022. Registration is free.
Open only to Europe-based artists: Young European Ceramics Competition 2023 (Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, France). Aplications are due January 15, 2023. There is no entry or participation fee.

Virtual Clay and NCECA recently announced their 2022-23 online lecture season—a series real-time online classes that gather a vibrant community of artists, designers and art historians to speak with you about important topics in ceramics. These online conversations are meant to challenge preconceptions and explore new territory, inspiring you to think about the world in fresh and different ways. Next lecture: Woody De Othello – Clay Affinities. Registration fee: $25.

This October, Craft Contemporary returns in a unifying gathering of contemporary approaches to the handmade. Craft Contemporary (Australia) is Craft Victoria’s annual festival amplifying the practice of craft in a state-wide program of talks, live demonstrations, exhibitions and more. Contemporary expressions of craft are explored within gallery, retail, educational and public spaces, calling attention to its ubiquitous and engaging presence. Have a look at all the events featuring ceramics (exhibitions, virtual open studios, workshops , and lectures).

The 2022 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale exhibition, Tangible World: The New Social Dynamics in Ceramics, opened last month at the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan. The exhibition showcases 72 works by 47 artists from 12 countries, which are categorized into four subtopics: Tracing – The Ceramic Journey, Amorphous – Interpretation of Nature, Metamorphosis – Material Philosophy, and Taking Shape – Connections in the World, accumulating a broad scope of contemporary ceramic art.

Stockholm Craft Week and Sydney Craft Week are both taking place later this week. These festivals create the opportunity for everyone to engage with contemporary craft (including ceramics), experience the benefits of making, and purchase directly from the artists.
