The week’s news in the ceramic art world – October 24, 2023

• The Keramikkünstlerhaus Neumünster (Germany) invites artists to apply to the Ceramic Artist Exchange – Tandem 2024. A jury will award six living and working scholarships for the residency program. Two artists of different generations (emerging / established artists) will be provided with studio and living space as well as equipment and basic materials free of charge for seven weeks. The scholarship is endowed with €700. Applications are due November 15, 2023.

• Applications for the 5th Siegburg Ceramics Award are open until October 31, 2023. The award is dedicated to current ceramic trends and is aimed at professionally working ceramists who are called upon to submit individual works independent of theme. Three prizes will be awarded: 1st prize of €2,000, 2nd prize of €1,200, and 3rd prize of €800.

• Yuliya Makliuk, a ceramic artist from Ukraine, found herself at the intersection of war and environmental responsibility. While power outages darkened studios and conflict raged, she illuminated a path to sustainable pottery, challenging perceptions and paving the way for a greener future in ceramic art. This is her story of innovation, hope, and a reimagining of ceramic practice.

• The Cultural Centre of Andenne, Belgium, has recently announced a call for applications for its annual Ceramics Market. The upcoming edition is scheduled for Whitsun Sunday and Monday, May 19-20, 2024. A jury of professionals will select 70 ceramists to participate. The participation fee is €150. The deadline for applications is December 3, 2023.

• Over 70 artists will show their work this weekend during the Oxford Ceramics Fair. This is one of the UK’s longest-running ceramics events, established over 26 years ago.

• A-B Projects invites you to a new State of Ceramics online discussion, Architectural Ceramics: Finding Solidarity in the Shape of a Roof Tile. Join Rosa Glaessner Novak as she explores the intricate connections between ceramic artists and workers, highlighting the roof tile’s historical significance as a beacon of shared heritage and potential solidarity. The talk will take place on Saturday, October 28, at 10 AM PST. Registration is free.

• The British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) and British Textile Biennial (BTB) will host an online discussion on The Decolonisation of Ceramics and Textiles tomorrow at 6:30 PM BST. Curator and artist Basil Olton will Chair this discussion with ceramics and textile artists Jacqueline Bishop, Theirry Oussou, and Masimba Hwati. The topic is the decolonization of textile and ceramics, working from the perspective of each artist’s research and artistic practice using both textile and ceramics in telling powerful stories, revealing hidden histories in the legacies of colonialism, and challenging the visibility of diasporic artists.

• The third edition of Ash Glazes: Techniques and Glazing from Natural Sources by Phil Rogers will be released on October 31. The book examines the practicalities of collecting and testing wood ashes, demonstrates the process of making them into glazes, and offers a step-by-step guide to using them. • The 9th edition of Grands Feux is taking place this week in and around La Borne, France. Organized by the Ceramics Association La Borne (ACLB) and the Contemporary Ceramic Center La Borne (CCCLB), the event features some incredible firing workshops, exhibitions, talks, and demonstrations.
